The book, in journal format, describes the experiences of the author and crew aboard the Regina Maris, a tall ship en route to the Arctic to study humpback whales. Oxenhorn's memoir is part of a poignant story. At the age of 38, just a month after his memoir was published, he died in an automobile accident in New York. In addition to his writing, he was director of the public policy communications program at the Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University.
At the time of his death he was on leave from Harvard and was in residence in Yaddo, a retreat for writers, artists and composers in Saratoga Springs. He had been working on a book about Kenya, where he taught for two years. Chapters from the memoir appeared earlier in The Atlantic.
