The sinking of the RMS Titanic on 15 April 1912 with the loss of more than 1600 people has spawned more than a century of books and films. The SS Carpathian arrived on the scene in time to rescue about 700 passengers, but inquiries conducted by both the United States and Great Britain revealed that another ship, the SS Californian, captained by Stanley Lord, was close enough to have seen distress rockets from the Titanic. Capt. Lord was officially cited for failing to render aid, but was never charged. Author Leslie Harrison was the General Secretary of the Mercantile Marine Service Association and set out to prove that Lord was innocent. The book, along with subsequent evidence, suggests that Capt. Lord, was a scapegoat, but not all were convinced. A century later, the topic remains controversial. Fine / Very Good +. Item #40
