Ice Palace was hailed as "the first all-Alaska-novel," providing a thinly disguised fictional plea for statehood, which came the following year. The fame of he author helped ensure the novel engaged public (and Congressional) awareness over the issue of statehood.
Edna Ferber was a hugely influential novelist whose won a Pulitzer Prize in 1924. Her best selling work, Giant, was made into a Hollywood film, as was Ice Palace. But not even a cast that included Richard Burton, Robert Ryan, Carolyn Jones, and Martha Hyer, was enough to lift sales at the box office.
