William Hensley was raised as an Alaskan Native living north of the Arctic Circle near Kotzebue Sound. As a student in the Lower Forty-eight, he learned the history of Alaskan land ownership and was a founder of he Northwest Alaskan Native Association. In 1971, thanks to Hensley (and others) the federal government set aside 44 million acres and $1 billion for the use of Alaskan Natives.
