The book offers lesser-known stories of British exploration to the Arctic (as well as Antarctica and Africa) in the age of sail. In 1816 John Barrow, second secretary to the British Admiralty, sent his own group of hand-picked naval officers around the globe to expand Britain's knowledge of the known world. The book was praised for filling in some of the blanks in British naval history, but also for delivering a no-holds-barred account of "daring fortitude and outright lunacy."
