In 1879 a New York publisher funded an official U.S. naval expedition to find the North Pole. The voyage of the USS Jeannette was almost immediately doomed when it got stuck in pack ice, then drifted for two years before sinking and leaving the crew of 32 marooned on an ice cap with minimal supplies. Only thirteen crew members survived.
